CITY TOUR

Khabarovsk is one of the most vital cities in the Russian Far East. Perched on 3 giant hills, overlooking the mighty Amur river. Founded in 1858, today Khabarovsk is the biggest industrial and cultural center of the Russian Far East.

In general the architectural plan of the central part of Khabarovsk remains unchanged. Filled with parks and river walks, Khabarovsk is a city for strolling. The broad, tree-lined main avenue, Muraviev-Amurskiy street, is the most popular place for leisurely walking. Khabarovsk is also the major transportation hub for rail, air and waterways.

The Transsiberian Railroad, the longest in the world, goes through Khabarovsk. Our guides will gladly show you the city filled with squares and parks, monuments and old houses.

The Far Eastern Arts Museum was set up in 1931 and at present holds over 10 thousand pieces of Russian and Western arts, as well as a unique collection of the Far Eastern aboriginal applied arts. The Arts Museum occupies one of the most beautiful buildings in Khabarovsk. The gems of the museum collection are icons from the Mediaeval Russian Art. The museum tours narrated by informed guides operate as often as required. To complete your visit there is a Gift Shop selling authentic Russian souvenirs and crafts.

Russians know what war is all about. The Historic Military Museum ( the War Memorial Museum) housed in the building - which is a charming specimen of an old Russian architectural style, the museum alongside with other buildings of the historical part of the city recreates the atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Khabarovsk. The museum displays exhibits and photographs, documenting the history of the Red Flag Eastern Military District. Museum exhibits also include armour and weaponry.

Built at the turn of the century and beautifully restored to its elegance, the building is home to a unique collection on fauna and flora of the Russian Far East. It also houses a picturesque ethnographic exposition. The museum traces the local history from the late 19th to the early 20th century through exhibits dealing with culture and life of the indigenous population, and the Russians who first appeared on the banks of the Amur river in the fall of the 16th century. Among the museum's 144 thousand exhibits there is a skeleton of a sea-cow, a mammal from the past, now fully extinct. Guided tours are offered daily.

CERAMICS FACTORY

The Khabarovsk Ceramics' Factory was opened 20 years ago and presently it is engaged in the production of ornamental everyday wares — plates and dishes, vases, candlesticks, etc. Local red clay is the raw material.

Casting and moulding are the major methods of manufacturing. Interlacing of folk art traditions and modern design, hand-made painting and artistic decoration make each piece of work inimitable in its beauty.

NATURE

Nature Reserve Khekhtsir is an attraction for nature-lovers, for those who care for wildlife preservation. Located 30 miles south-west of the city with the total area 173 square miles, the reserve is a part of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range stretching for 600 miles and rising 2500-3300 feet high.

It dates from 1963 and lies at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers very close to the Chinese border. This is a unique place where the North and South coexist. Southern lianas, Manchurian walnuts make the Far Eastern taiga look like an impenetrable subtropical rainforest. They grow next to evergreen conifers — representatives of the severe North.

More than 35 mammal and 191 bird species inhabit the reserve. Largest of the exotic carnivore here is the Amur tiger protected since 1947. Bears, foxes, wolves, elks, wild boars, sables are seen occasionally here. A park attendant will take you for a wonderful stroll in the woods to enjoy the Far Eastern nature.

The latest addition to this wonderful tour is a short visit to the Russian-Chinese Border by the village of Kazakevichevo at the confluence of the Amur and the Ussuri rivers. Until recently the place was closed for foreign visitors. Picnics are offered for your enjoyment there too.
